Each summer the SWWP holds a three week summer institue to train new TC's. The institute is supervised by Jennifer Wilson of the College of Education at the University of South Carolina. The institute accepts up to twenty teachers who use writing in grades K-12. The dates for the 2010 Summer Institute are June 7th - July 1st, Monday-Friday 9 AM – 4 PM at USC Sumter. Please also reserve Saturday, May 8th 9 AM to noon for the Summer Institute Orientation.
These teachers will focus on their own writing and writing instruction by:
- critiquing and improving their own writing
- attending mini courses with professional writers
- reading current literature on writing instruction
- demonstrating and revising teaching practices they have developed
- learning a new model of staff development through reflective practice and teacher research groups
Participation in the three week summer institute includes:
- Full tuition waivers for eighteen teachers
- 120 recertification hours for the state of South Carolina
- Daily opportunities to develop as a writer and as a teacher of writing
It is always a great time for learning and growth for all who participate. You will leave at the end of the summer with many, many ideas that can be easily implemented in your classroom in the fall. Also, lifelong friendships can and have been made through this institute. Please come out and join our growing family of educators!
